24 SONGS BY MANOS HADJIDAKIS FOR YOUNG PIANISTS 1
Transcription: Takis Farazis
Manos Hadjidakis is one of the most significant contemporary Greek composers, renowned
both in Greece as well as beyond the borders of his own country. His work covers a broad musical spectrum of songs, orchestral music, pieces for piano and compositions for the ballet, the theatre and the cinema. Hadjidakis’ music is outstanding for its overflowing lyricism, the wealth of its timbres and a distinctive musical idiom which combines a great diversity of musical influence at a high aesthetic level.
The present anthology of piano pieces includes some of Hadjidakis’ best known songs, addressed especially to young piano students, their teachers and also to amateur and professional musicians who wish to approach the composer’s work in a pleasant and easily accessible manner. Particular attention has been given to preserve the purity of melodies, adding only the absolutely essential elements of harmony and counterpoint, in such a way as to give the songs the simplest of forms while maintaining all the color, finesse and humour that distinguishes them. A more classical style has been chosen for certain pieces, referring at times to the counterpoint of Baroque composers or to the simplicity and luminescence of Mozart’s piano pieces for children – traces of influence in any case already apparent in Manos Hadjidakis’ work.
A further important part of this publication – besides the book – is the CD under the title 24 Songs by Manos Hadjidakis including these piano versions, plus some orchestrated versions enriched with the timbres of harp, zither, violin, cello, accordion and glockenspiel. As a result, the recording becomes musically enchanting, besides maintaining its value as a point of reference for the study of this music.
It should also be mentioned that these piano versions have two different levels of approach. Regarding the technical difficulty, fairly simple arrangements have been chosen for most pieces in order to make them more accessible to students without advanced skills. On the other hand, emphasis on details concerning the interpretation has been given, allowing more advanced players to enjoy the performance.
Phrasing, fingering, indications of musical expression and the use of trills and pedal balance the simplicity of the arrangements while preserving the spirit of the composer’s
music.
We hope this publication will offer a pleasant journey through Manos Hadjidakis’ charming, tender, sometimes yearning and sometimes playful musical landscapes, and that it will bring his music closer to the broader public and, especially, to the younger generation.
